Abstract:
In this presentation, I’ll discuss how we can use music as a lens to study human cognition,
cross-cultural differences in perception, and cultural shifts triggered by disruptive historical
events. By adopting a big data approach, we can draw comparisons across cultures on both macro and micro scales. Specifically, I will demonstrate how real-world individual music listening patterns can reveal the underlying mechanisms of cultural diversity. Simultaneously, I’ll show how spatially and temporally granular city-level data can be
leveraged to uncover the diffusion networks underlying musical trends. These insights in turn shed light on the factors influencing cultural richness and the transmission of cultural trends.
